Choosing the right mask for work

Aug 24, 2020 | Blog

We are primarily a dental supplier so we know a lot about masks and we want to share that knowledge with you along with our pick for the best option.

Remember, if you or a colleague come down with Covid-19 your entire team may need to get tested and isolate. That could mean temporary closure of your business as well as notifying clients that they may need to get tested and isolate too.

Wear the right mask, protect yourself and protect your business.

Here’s a rundown of the four common mask types you see and hear about and a quick primer on what they’re good for:

homemade-face-mask

Homemade Mask

Minimal protection for the wearer

  • May reduce the chance of an infected wearer passing the virus on.
  • Varies wildly in effectiveness.
  • 2013 Pubmed study found that these should only be worn as a last resort.
surgical-face-mask

Surgical Mask (Type I & Type II)

Minimal protection for the wearer

  • Reduces the chance of an infected wearer passing the virus on.
  • More effective than a homemade mask at protecting others.
  • Typically only effective for up to an hour.
filter-face-mask-with-valve

Filter Masks (With Valve)

Poses risk to others

  • One-way valve offers some protection to the wearer but does not filter exhaled air.
  • Heightens risk of virus transmission to others.
  • Use of these masks is banned in certain cities and on some airlines.
ffp2-face-mask

CE-Marked FFP2 Mask (N95)

Protects wearer & others

  • Can prevent the wearer catching or spreading disease.
  • Tested to minimum 94% filtering efficiency.
  • Effective for up to 8 hours.

The best mask for you

If you wear a mask to reassure clients that you won’t pass anything on to them, a surgical style mask might be OK. Just make sure you handle it carefully and change it at least every hour (or as soon as it gets damp).

If you want to protect yourself as well as your clients you should wear a CE-Marked FFP2 mask. Handle it as little as possible and one mask can last your working day.

Wear the right mask, protect yourself and protect your business.
